Injury Report: Charlotte Knowlson

May 27th, 2011 | Injury Report

Charlotte! Yowzers, those are some gnarly x-rays! Can you give the the low-down on what happened?

Well I’d been working at the cable all day, headed out for an after work shred planning on ironing out the creases for national trials on the weekend. Sun was going, down cable was quiet, perfect for an awesome ride. Which it was, but sometimes I forget that I’m not invincible and push it a bit more.

My wreck. Complete fail. Back lip on a flatbar. Just took it to hard, ended up falling on my arm on the edge of the bar. I heard the snap. Floating about looking for my skate, I thought my arm was a bit floppy and guessed I’d dislocated my elbow. So I was like cool they can pop it back and I’ll be back out. As I got pulled into the good old orange bathtub, I realized I wasn’t holding my arm up, beyond the break it was just chilling on my side. Haha sounds bad, but until the ambulance dude laughed at my question of ‘so it’s broken?’ I wasn’t that worried.

Turns out I had a spiral break of my humerus, it was now in three pieces. 2-hour surgery took 5 hours, and I ended up with a metal plate and 2 screws holding it together, and 42 staples to stitch me up. It’s not all bad though, the scar is gnarly, the drugs made me hallucinate, I’ve got some movement back already thanks to the metal work (which is there for life) and I’m only 4 weeks post op. 2 more months and I’ll be on the physical stuff, the right arms still going strong and I can skate with one ☺I’ve pretty much exhausted any possible online shredding, daytime TV sucks, not having to do exams… BONUS. The only thing keeping me going is the thought of getting back on the water and what I’m gonna land next. Call me crazy, but I love Wakeskating.

Are you already out of a cast? No cast! they operated on it the next day, i had the cast for one day so the bones wouldn’t crunch so much. Haha
What are you going to do for the next 4 months while your arm heals? The next four months, I’m staying home for a couple of weeks to blast out the physio then back to lake, to work at the cable all summer. Inspiration to get riding again or torture I’m not sure .:D

Will you hold a grudge against the flatbar? No grudge, the week before the rooftop gave me a black eye haha didn’t stop me from claiming that bad boy, plus I plan on royally kicking the flat bars ass when I’m back.

I like your attitude. Hang in there and heal up fast terminator! Take lots of vitamins. We will try to keep you entertained with wakeskating content & inspiration!
